Case IH 3577 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): DM1DCU SPN1 message - Error in DCU active / DCU Fault Detected: Urea Tank Empty

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has logged this fault because the Dosing Control Unit (DCU) has initiated an error state. Specifically, the DCU has detected that the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF / Urea) tank is empty, or the DEF level sensor is erroneously reporting an empty tank.

   Mechanically check the actual DEF fluid level in the tank instead of relying solely on the cab gauge.

   Use a diagnostic tester/EST to read the actual DEF level value being reported to the ECU and compare it with the physical fluid level.

   Check the DEF level sensor inside the tank to verify if the float swimmer is stuck due to crystallized DEF or if it is free-floating.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the DEF tank level sensor, the DCU, and the ECU for damaged wires, loose pins, or corrosion.

   Ensure the DEF concentration is correct (32.5% urea to 67.5% distilled water) and check the DEF dosing injector tip for severe scale build-up.

   Fill the Tank

   If the tank is genuinely empty, fill it with high-quality DEF. Clear the codes and run the machine to see if the system resets.

   Clean or Replace the Level Sensor

   If the tank is full but the sensor reads empty, remove the DEF level sending unit from the tank. Clean any crystallized DEF scale using warm distilled water to free up the float. If the float moves freely but still reads empty on a multimeter/diagnostic tool, the internal sensor has failed and the sending unit must be replaced.

   Repair Wiring

   If the sensor tests good, trace the wiring harness back to the DCU. Repair any chafed wires or replace corroded connector pigtails.

   Replace the DCU (DEF Pump)

   If the sensor and wiring are fully functional but the DCU continues to broadcast an erroneous "tank empty" SPN1 message, the Dosing Control Unit itself has suffered an internal failure and must be replaced.

   System Reset & Healing

   After replacing parts, use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes. The tractor may need to be run under load (exhaust temperatures over 425°F) for up to 30 minutes to complete a system "healing" cycle and exit the derate condition.
