Case IH 3581 (F-519859-00) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Performance limit active due to either stage - Performance Limitation active / Torque limitation is active
Issue description
This is an information-only fault code indicating that the machine's engine has entered a derated state (a reduction in torque or engine power) to protect the engine or comply with emissions regulations. It is logged as a secondary fault code alongside a primary fault code that triggered the derate, which is almost always related to a failure in the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) or Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) system.
Applies to these machines

Check the cause
Retrieve Primary Codes: Use the in-cab display or the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EASY tool) to pull all present and non-present fault codes. Look for the primary SCR/DEF fault code that was logged at the same time as 3581.
Inspect DEF Fluid: Check the DEF/AdBlue tank level and test the fluid quality, as poor reagent quality is a frequent trigger for SCR derates.
Check for Leaks/Damage: Visually inspect the DEF dosing module, DEF lines, and NOx sensors for physical damage, leaks, or disconnected harnesses.
Repair steps
Address the Primary Fault
Diagnose and repair the root cause indicated by the primary fault code retrieved during your diagnostic checks (e.g., replace a failed DEF pump, swap a faulty NOx sensor, or drain and refill contaminated DEF fluid).
Clear Codes
Once the physical repair is complete, use the EASY tool to clear the inactive fault codes.
Perform an SCR Healing Cycle
Depending on the engine software and the specific primary fault, the system must verify the repair before it will lift the torque limitation. For some Tier 4B engines, returning the machine to low idle or performing an engine restart will clear the 'engine fault' message and return the machine to normal operation. For other Tier 4A/B systems, the engine may need to be run under load or at high exhaust temperatures (e.g., over 425 degrees) for a specific duration (often 30+ minutes) to allow the SCR system to 'heal' and verify that emissions are back within legal thresholds.
Verify Operation
Confirm that code 3581 changes from Active to Inactive and that full engine power is restored.
