Case IH 3581 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ENG): Performance limit active due to either stage - Performance Limitation active

Issue description

This is an emissions-related derate code indicating that the engine control system has actively limited the engine's performance (torque/power derate) because a primary fault within the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) or Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) system has been active long enough or is severe enough.

Check the cause

  1. Scan for primary codes using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to identify the root SCR/DEF fault (e.g., codes 3593, 3594, 3609)

  2. Check DEF quality and level to ensure the fluid is not degraded, crystallized, or contaminated with water or diesel

  3. Inspect the DEF dosing system for proper pump pressure and check for crystallized urea blocking the dosing injector nozzle

  4. Verify exhaust temperatures by checking the upstream and downstream SCR catalyst temperature sensors for plausible readings

Repair steps

  1. Address the Root Cause

Repair or replace the component causing the primary SCR fault (e.g., replace a failed DEF dosing pump, faulty NOx sensor, or clogged DEF filter).

  2. Flush the DEF System

If poor urea quality triggered the derate, drain the DEF tank, flush the lines, and refill with fresh, high-quality DEF.

  3. Perform an SCR Conditioning Cycle

Run the tractor under a heavy load or perform a forced stationary regeneration so the exhaust temperatures exceed 425°F (220°C) for at least 30 to 45 minutes to verify the repair.

  4. Clear Codes

Once the SCR system successfully doses DEF and the NOx reduction is verified by the sensors during the hot cycle, the ECU will change the 3581 code from 'Active' to 'Inactive', which can then be cleared using the diagnostic tool.
