3581 (DTC FD8F) - ECU

Case IH 3581 (DTC FD8F) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Torque limitation is active

Issue description

This is an informational or consequential fault code (a 'derate' state) indicating that the engine control module has actively limited the engine's torque output. It is triggered as a protection mechanism or an emissions-related penalty (SCR Inducement) caused by a primary fault such as an empty DEF/AdBlue tank, DEF quality faults, tampering detections, or excessive engine/turbocharger temperatures.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • 7240
  • 8240
  • 9240
  • Magnum series tractors
  • Steiger series tractors

Check the cause

  1. Scan for primary active DTCs, specifically looking for SCR inducement codes, DEF quality faults, tampering faults, or catalyst protection warnings.

  2. Check DEF/AdBlue levels and quality to ensure the tank is not empty and the fluid is not contaminated.

  3. Check operating temperatures for accompanying codes indicating excessive intake air temperature, oil temperature, or turbocharger protection.

Repair steps

  1. Address the primary fault

Diagnose and repair the primary fault code (e.g., replacing a faulty NOx sensor, refilling the DEF tank, or repairing a tampered emissions component). Code 3581 cannot be fixed directly.

  2. Perform emergency move (if necessary)

If the machine experiences full power loss and needs to be moved safely, command an 'Emergency Re-start'. This allows 30 seconds of operation without power loss to move the machine before the engine automatically reduces to low idle speed.

  3. Reset the inducement lock

If the torque limitation was caused by an SCR Inducement lock (e.g., 3 tampering/quality detections in 40 hours), use the dealer Electronic Service Tool (EST) to navigate to the 'Engine Restart Counter Reset' screen and electronically reset the system.

  4. Clear codes and test

Once the primary issue is repaired and the counter is reset, clear the inactive fault codes and test run the machine under load to ensure the torque limitation does not return.
