3585

Case IH 3585 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine shut off (after idling phase)

Issue description

Severe Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) inducement code forcing the engine to shut down after a mandatory idling period to protect the engine and prevent emissions non-compliance. Triggered because the DEF tank is completely empty or there is a critical, unresolved fault in the emissions system.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger / Quadtrac (350-600 series)
  • Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Optum
  • Axial-Flow (AFX) series

Check the cause

  1. Physically inspect the DEF tank level (do not rely solely on the cab gauge, as the level sender may be stuck or faulty)

  2. Scan for primary active SCR/DEF fault codes (e.g., 19415, 3593, 3581) using the AFS Pro display or Electronic Service Tool (EST)

  3. Inspect the DEF tank, supply/backflow lines, and dosing valve for physical damage, leaks, or white urea crystallization/blockages

  4. Verify the operation and voltage of the DEF level and temperature sensors using the EST

Repair steps

  1. Refill the DEF Tank

If the tank is empty, refill it completely with fresh, high-quality Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF).

  2. Address Primary Failures

If the tank was already full, diagnose and repair the root cause indicated by the primary active SCR codes (e.g., replace a faulty DEF dosing valve, unclog a blocked backflow line, or drain and replace contaminated DEF).

  3. Clear the Codes

Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) and clear the inactive fault codes from the ECU.

  4. Perform System Validation

Start the engine and bring it up to normal operating temperature.

  5. Run Under Load

Run the engine under load or perform a forced SCR system test via the EST.
