Case IH 3586 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC) or Dosing Control Unit (DCU): Plausibility check of catalyst system - Temperature after Catalyst not plausible
Issue description
This code indicates that the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensor located downstream (after) the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst is sending a reading that does not make logical sense to the engine's computer. The temperature is either outside the expected operational model or does not align plausibly with the readings from the upstream temperature sensor.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the downstream exhaust gas temperature sensor for chafing, melting from exhaust heat, corrosion, or loose pins.
Check the exhaust system for any leaks between the engine and the SCR catalyst, as escaping exhaust gas can cause the downstream sensor to read lower-than-expected temperatures.
Verify the sensor's resistance and voltage using a multimeter to determine if the sensor has failed electrically.
Ensure the SCR catalyst itself is not physically damaged or clogged.
Repair steps
Cool Down
Ensure the machine is turned off and the exhaust system has completely cooled down to prevent severe burns.
Locate Sensor
Locate the exhaust gas temperature sensor on the exhaust system. For code 3586, you must locate the sensor positioned after (downstream of) the SCR catalyst.
Disconnect
Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor harness.
Remove
Using the appropriate wrench, loosen the hex nut securing the sensor and carefully unthread the sensor from the exhaust pipe.
Prep New Sensor
Apply a small amount of high-temp anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (if not pre-applied by the manufacturer). Be extremely careful not to get any anti-seize on the sensor probe itself.
Install
Thread the new sensor into the exhaust system and tighten securely.
Reconnect
Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks firmly into place.
Clear Codes
Turn on the machine and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear fault code 3586. Run the engine up to operating temperature to verify the code does not return.
