3597

Case IH 3597 – EDC / DCU: Minimum urea level 3

Issue description

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF / AdBlue) in the tank has dropped to a critically low level (Level 3 warning). If the tank is actually full, this code points to a failure in the DEF tank level sensor's ability to accurately read the fluid level.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Magnum series tractors
  • Case IH Steiger series tractors
  • Case IH Maxxum series tractors
  • Case IH Axial-Flow Combines (e.g., 7240, 8260)
  • Case CE (Construction Equipment) utilizing FPT Tier 4 Final engines

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the DEF tank to confirm if it is actually empty. If it is empty, simply refilling the tank and clearing the code may resolve the issue.

  2. Check DEF fluid quality for contamination or poor-quality DEF that can cause chemical reactions damaging the sending unit sensor or causing crystallization.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the DEF head unit to the DCU/EDC. Look for chafed wires, corrosion at the connector pins, or signs of moisture intrusion.

  4. Use a diagnostic scan tool to monitor the live data for the DEF tank level. If the tank is full but the sensor reads 0% or shows erratic voltage, the DEF head unit/level sensor has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the machine

Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Drain the tank

Place a clean drain pan under the DEF tank and drain the existing fluid. (Do not reuse the fluid if contamination is suspected).

  3. Disconnect lines

Carefully disconnect the electrical harness connector and the DEF supply/return lines from the top of the DEF head unit. Cap the lines to prevent debris from entering the SCR system.

  4. Remove the sensor

Remove the mounting bolts or retaining ring securing the DEF head unit flange to the top of the tank. Carefully pull the long sensor assembly straight up and out of the tank.

  5. Install the new unit

Insert the new DEF head unit into the tank, ensuring the gasket/O-ring is properly seated. Tighten the mounting hardware to OEM torque specs.

  6. Reconnect and refill

Reconnect the DEF lines and the electrical harness. Refill the tank with fresh, high-quality DEF.

  7. Clear codes

Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 3597 fault code. Run the engine to ensure the DEF pump primes and the level registers correctly on the dash.
