3598-06 - BCM

Case IH 3598-06 - BCM – BCM: Radio switched power - short circuit to ground

Issue description

The control module has detected that the switched power circuit supplying 12V power to the cab's radio is shorting directly to a ground source (the chassis or a ground wire). This typically disables the radio to protect the circuit from overcurrent.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Magnum 180
  • Magnum 200
  • Magnum 220
  • Magnum 240
  • Magnum 250
  • Magnum 280
  • Magnum 310
  • Magnum 340
  • Magnum 380
  • Magnum 400

Check the cause

  1. Isolate the Component: Disconnect the radio head unit from the cab wiring harness. If the fault code changes from 'short to ground' (06) to 'open circuit' (05), the short is internal to the radio unit itself.

  2. Harness Inspection: If the short to ground remains active with the radio disconnected, the fault lies in the wiring. Inspect the radio wiring adapter (ISO to Packard connector) and the cab main wiring harness for pinched wires, chafing against metal cab frames, or melted insulation.

  3. BCM Pin Check: Inspect the Body Control Module connectors for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that could be bridging the radio switched power pin to a ground pin.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical arcing during repair.

  2. Access the Radio

Remove the headliner or radio bezel trim in the cab to access the radio head unit.

  3. Disconnect and Test

Unplug the radio wiring adapter. Using a digital multimeter, check the continuity between the switched power wire on the harness side and a known good chassis ground.

  4. Repair the Harness (If shorted)

Trace the cab main harness back toward the BCM. Locate the chafed or pinched section of the wire. Cut out the damaged section and splice in a new wire using weather-sealed crimp connectors, or replace the harness entirely if the damage is extensive.

  5. Replace the Radio (If internal short)

If the harness tests good (infinite resistance to ground), the radio has failed internally. Install a replacement OEM radio unit.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the radio adapter harness, reinstall the radio into the cab bezel, and reconnect the battery.

  7. Clear Codes

Turn the ignition on and use the AFS Pro 1200 monitor or a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 3598-06 BCM fault code. Test the radio for proper operation.
