Case IH 3609 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Urea quality and urea warning level 4
Issue description
This is an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) inducement code. It indicates that the system has detected poor Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF/Urea) quality or a related emissions failure, triggering a Level 4 warning (which typically results in an engine torque derate). This specific code is a consequential fault—meaning it is triggered by another leading active fault in the SCR system.
Applies to these machines
12 machines- Steiger 350
- Steiger 400
- Steiger 450
- Steiger 500
- Steiger 550
- Steiger 600
- Quadtrac
- Magnum
- Maxxum
- Puma
- Farmall
- Axial-Flow
Check the cause
Check for leading fault codes: Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to scan the ECU for primary codes related to the NOx sensors, DEF quality sensor, or DEF dosing module. You must correct the leading active fault first.
Test DEF quality: Extract a sample of the Diesel Exhaust Fluid from the tank and test it using a DEF refractometer. It should read exactly 32.5% urea concentration.
Inspect for contamination: Check the DEF tank for signs of contamination, such as diesel fuel, water, dirt, or crystallization.
Check sensor live data: Use the diagnostic tool to monitor live data from the DEF quality/level sensor (header unit) and the upstream/downstream NOx sensors to see if they are reading erratically or failing to communicate.
Repair steps
Address the Root Cause
Repair the primary active fault identified during diagnostics (e.g., replace a failed NOx sensor or DEF head unit).
Flush the DEF System (If Contaminated)
If the DEF fluid tests out of spec, drain the DEF tank completely. Flush the tank and lines with distilled water, and replace the DEF filter.
Refill DEF
Fill the tank with fresh, high-quality Diesel Exhaust Fluid (API certified).
Clear Codes
Use the EST diagnostic tool to erase all inactive and active faults listed in the ECU.
Perform SCR System Validation
After the repair is completed, the inducement code may still be present. The engine must be brought up to operating temperature and run under load until the ECU determines that the SCR system is operating properly and the NOx conversion efficiency is back within normal thresholds.
