3615

Case IH 3615 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): SRA2EDC initialization fault

Issue description

The Electronic Variable Geometry Turbocharger (eVGT) actuator is failing to initialize properly or is attempting to initialize more than ten times, indicating a communication or electrical failure between the eVGT actuator and the engine controller.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger (350-600 series)
  • Magnum
  • Puma
  • Optum
  • Quadtrac
  • 721F
  • 821F
  • 921F

Check the cause

  1. Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to confirm that fault code 3615 is currently present and active.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and the eVGT actuator for short circuits, open circuits, or disconnected/broken CAN cables.

  3. Verify the voltage supply to the eVGT actuator to ensure it is receiving adequate power.

  4. Check if the eVGT actuator is physically sticking, blocked, or overheated.

  5. If the wiring and actuator test fine, evaluate the ECU for faults or software/configuration issues.

Repair steps

  1. Repair or replace wiring harness

If the diagnostic checks reveal damaged wiring or loose connectors between the ECU and the eVGT actuator, repair or replace the affected wiring harness section.

  2. Replace eVGT actuator

If the wiring harness and power supply are intact but the actuator still fails to initialize or communicate over the CAN bus, the eVGT actuator is defective and must be replaced.

  3. Replace or reprogram ECU

If both the wiring and the eVGT actuator are confirmed to be in good working order, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) is likely faulty. Replace the ECU or reflash the software as per OEM guidelines.

  4. Clear codes and verify

After repairs are made, use the EST to clear the fault codes and cycle the engine to ensure the eVGT initializes correctly and the code does not return.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • eVGT Actuator (Electronic Variable Geometry Turbocharger Actuator)

On some FPT engine applications, the actuator is serviced as part of the complete turbocharger assembly, while on others it can be replaced independently.

  • Engine Wiring Harness

    ECU to eVGT

  • Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC)

  • 20A Mini Yellow fuse

    84127704

Related fuse for the eVGT actuator circuit on some models (like the Optum 300). Alternate part number: 10401190.
