3616

Case IH 3616 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Torque limitation due to turbo charger protection

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has actively initiated a power reduction (derate) to protect the turbocharger from overspeeding or thermal damage. The code is logged when the active torque limitation exceeds 25% of the desired torque for longer than 60 seconds and will automatically reset once the torque limitation drops below 25%.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • Steiger series
  • Puma series
  • Magnum series
  • MX/TG series
  • 721F wheel loader
  • 821F wheel loader
  • 921F wheel loader

Check the cause

  1. Verify Operating Conditions: Determine if the machine is currently operating at a high altitude.

  2. Check for Companion Codes: Look for related turbocharger or pressure codes, specifically Code 3648.

  3. Inspect Air Intake System: Check the engine air filters and intake piping for severe restrictions or blockages.

  4. Inspect Exhaust System: Check the exhaust piping and muffler for damage or restrictions.

  5. Sensor Verification: Using an Electronic Service Tool (EST), verify that the barometric pressure sensor and boost pressure sensors are reading accurately.

Repair steps

  1. Address Environmental Factors

If the machine was working at a high altitude or under extreme load, allow the engine to return to normal operating conditions. The code is designed to reset itself once the torque limitation drops below the 25% threshold.

  2. Clear Intake/Exhaust Restrictions

If operating at normal altitudes, remove and replace restricted primary and secondary engine air filters. Clear any debris from the intake piping.

  3. Clear the Code

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the diagnostic port, clear the inactive 3616 code, and test run the machine under load to see if the derate returns.

  4. Turbocharger Inspection

If the code persists alongside pressure deviation codes (like 3648), physically inspect the turbocharger wastegate and actuator for sticking. If the turbocharger bearings are failing or the wastegate is seized, the turbocharger assembly must be replaced.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • Turbocharger Assembly

    A184785

Fits various Case IH tractors. Always verify against the specific engine serial number.

  • Turbocharger Assembly

    409570-16

Always verify against the specific engine serial number.

  • Engine Air Filters (Primary & Secondary)

Required if intake restriction is causing the turbo protection derate.

  • Boost Pressure / Barometric Pressure Sensors

Required if EST diagnostics prove the sensors are reading out of range, falsely triggering the protection mode.
