3617

Case IH 3617 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Urea quality and urea warning level 9 (NCD Inducement Fault Level 1 - Group 4 - DEF Quality)

Issue description

This is an inducement fault. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) activates this code because the Dosing Control Unit (DCU) has initiated an inducement (a forced engine derate or shutdown sequence) due to the presence of another active fault code in the emissions system.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger (350 to 600 HP)
  • Magnum
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • Farmall
  • MX/TG series
  • Axial-Flow 5130
  • Axial-Flow 6130
  • Axial-Flow 7130
  • Axial-Flow 7240
  • Axial-Flow 8240
  • Axial-Flow 9240
  • SV340B
  • TR340B

Check the cause

  1. Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) and check for other active fault codes in the ECU and DCU

  2. Diagnose the root cause by addressing other active fault codes first (e.g., NOx sensor deviation, DEF quality sensor failure, or DEF dosing module errors)

  3. Inspect the DEF tank for contaminated or poor-quality Diesel Exhaust Fluid (water, diesel, or debris) which can damage the sending unit sensor

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic tool

Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.

  2. Read fault codes

Read all active and stored fault codes to identify the primary failure (e.g., a failed DEF quality sensor or a clogged DEF doser injector).

  3. Drain and flush DEF tank

If the DEF fluid is contaminated, drain the DEF tank completely, flush the system, and refill with fresh 32.5% aqueous urea solution (DEF).

  4. Replace failed component

Replace the failed component identified by the root cause fault code (see common parts below).

  5. Clear fault codes

Use the EST to clear the fault codes. Note: If a DEF dosing module is replaced, it must be programmed to the vehicle after replacement.

  6. Verify repair

Run the machine to verify that the SCR system is dosing correctly and that the inducement (Code 3617) has been lifted.
