3618

Case IH 3618 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Emergency start time expired and shutdown initiated

Issue description

This is an 'info only' failure indicating that the engine control unit has detected a severe underlying fault and has activated the engine shutdown inducement procedure. The engine is only allowed to start for 30 seconds before it is forced to shut down again until the root cause is fixed.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Steiger series (350 to 600 HP)
  • Case IH Magnum series
  • Case IH Puma series
  • Case IH Farmall series
  • Case IH Axial-Flow Combines (e.g., 7230, 8230, 9230)

Check the cause

  1. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port

  2. Read all active and stored fault codes in the Engine Control Unit (ECU)

  3. Look for the primary fault code(s) that triggered the shutdown inducement (e.g., critical engine protection faults, Urea quality warnings, NOx sensor deviations, or crankcase pressure limits)

Repair steps

  1. Identify the Root Cause

Using the EST, identify the primary active fault code(s) responsible for the inducement.

  2. Repair the Primary Fault

Follow the specific OEM troubleshooting and repair procedure for the primary fault code (e.g., if the inducement was triggered by a failed NOx sensor or a blocked DEF line, replace the sensor or clear the line).

  3. Clear the Inducement

Once the primary failure is repaired, the ECU will recognize that the parameters are back within normal limits.

  4. Clear Codes

Clear the fault memory using the EST. Code 3618 will change from active to inactive and can be erased once the root cause is resolved.
