Case IH 3636 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Fuel in Oil expected reaction

Issue description

The engine control system has detected or calculated an excessive amount of diesel fuel diluting the engine oil, which dramatically reduces oil viscosity and can lead to severe internal engine damage. The ECU calculates this via crankcase pressure, oil pressure, and DPF regenerations, and takes protective action (typically a severe torque derate or power limitation).

Check the cause

  1. Check the engine oil level and smell the dipstick to confirm physical fuel dilution (oil will be overfull and smell strongly of diesel).

  2. Inspect the blow-by filter (crankcase breather) for clogs, as a restricted filter artificially raises crankcase pressure and can trigger a false code.

  3. Check for fuel system leaks, including active fuel rail pressure errors (indicating a leaking injector) or a failed high-pressure fuel pump shaft seal.

  4. Review DPF regeneration history using a diagnostic tool to see if the machine has been stuck in a continuous regeneration loop causing cylinder wash-down.

Repair steps

  1. Identify and Repair the Root Cause

    Based on the diagnostics above, replace the leaking component (e.g., leaking fuel injectors, a blown high-pressure fuel pump seal, or a clogged blow-by filter).

  2. Drain the Contaminated Oil

    Drain the engine oil completely to remove all diesel-contaminated fluid.

  3. Replace the Oil Filter

    Remove the old oil filter and install a new OEM-spec filter.

  4. Refill Engine Oil

    Fill the engine with the correct capacity and specification of engine oil (e.g., SAE 10W40 API CJ-4, depending on the exact model).

  5. Reset the ECU Calculation

    You must connect a diagnostic laptop with the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Navigate to the UDS Routine Control Service and execute the command to reset the fuel-in-oil calculation. If you skip this step, the ECU will still calculate that the oil is diluted and the code/derate will remain active even with fresh oil.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Clear the fault codes, run the engine up to operating temperature, and verify that crankcase pressure is normal and the code does not return.
