Case IH 3638 – EDC (Electronic Diesel Control) / Engine ECU: Torque limitation due to NTC
Issue description
This is a secondary, informational fault code indicating that the engine control system has actively initiated a power reduction (derate) that limits engine torque. This specific torque limitation is triggered by an engine brake shut-off event.
Applies to these machines
1 machine- Case IH and New Holland equipment with FPT Tier 3 and Tier 4a engines
Check the cause
Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the CNH EST tool) to the machine
Pull all active and stored fault codes from the EDC
Look for the primary active fault code that triggered the engine brake shut-off event (the failure triggering the torque limitation should also be active)
Repair steps
Identify the Root Cause
Diagnose and repair the primary active fault code that is present alongside code 3638 (likely a code related to the engine brake, exhaust flap actuator, or a critical engine sensor).
Perform the Repair
Replace the faulty component or repair the wiring harness associated with the primary code.
Clear Codes
Once the primary issue is physically repaired, use the diagnostic tool to erase all fault codes.
Verify
Cycle the key and run the engine to verify that the primary code does not return and that the 3638 torque limitation code has successfully cleared, restoring full engine power.
