Case IH 3638 (DTC F4EF) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC): Torque limitation caused by engine brake

   Connect your diagnostic tool (e.g., Case IH EST) to the machine.

   Access the Engine ECU and pull the full list of active and stored fault codes.

   Look for the primary fault code that forced the engine into a derate/torque limitation state (e.g., exhaust pressure issues, turbocharger speed limits, or engine temperature warnings).

   Identify the Root Cause

   Review the failure memory for the accompanying root error code that triggered the engine brake torque limitation.

   Diagnose the Primary Fault

   Follow the specific troubleshooting steps for the root error code found in step 1.

   Perform Repairs

   Repair or replace the component dictated by the root fault code (this code will not clear until the underlying issue is resolved).

   Clear Codes

   Once the root repair is complete, use the diagnostic tool to clear all stored fault codes, including the 3638 (F4EF) informational code.

   Test Operation

   Run the engine and verify that the active power reduction has been lifted and the machine can achieve full torque without the code returning.
