Case IH 3640 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Turbine speed - Signal too high

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an abnormally high signal from the turbocharger's turbine speed sensor, exceeding 180,000 RPM for more than 0.05 seconds. This can be caused by a faulty turbine speed sensor, faulty electrical wiring (such as a short circuit to battery voltage), or a faulty ECU.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the turbine speed sensor (located on the turbocharger compressor housing) for physical damage, loose mounting, or heavy debris.

  2. Trace the wiring harness from the turbine speed sensor back to the ECU. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or corrosion inside the connector pins.

  3. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the live data from the turbine speed sensor. If the sensor reads an impossible value (like >180,000 RPM) while the engine is off or idling, the sensor or wiring is definitively shorted/failed.

  4. Disconnect the sensor and test the voltage at the harness connector to ensure the ECU is sending the correct reference voltage and that the signal return wire is not shorted to power.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the turbine speed sensor, which is mounted directly into the center housing or compressor cover of the turbocharger.

  3. Disconnect Harness

    Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place. Gently twist and pull the sensor out of the turbocharger housing. Note: Do not pry aggressively, as breaking the sensor tip inside the turbocharger will require turbocharger disassembly.

  5. Install New Sensor

    Lubricate the O-ring on the new turbine speed sensor with a small amount of clean engine oil. Insert the sensor into the housing until it is fully seated.

  6. Secure the Sensor

    Install and tighten the retaining bolt to the OEM torque specification (usually snug; do not overtighten as the housing is aluminum).

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the wiring harness back into the sensor and reconnect the negative battery cable.

  8. Clear Codes

    Use the CNH EST to clear the inactive 3640 fault code. Start the engine, bring it to operating temperature, and run it under load to verify the code does not return.
