Case IH 3644 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): P3 pressure errors in EPCtl - Exhaust Pressure upstream Turbine too high.
Issue description
The engine control system has detected that the exhaust gas pressure measured upstream of the turbocharger turbine (P3 pressure) is exceeding the maximum allowable threshold, or there is an electrical fault (such as a short circuit) causing the sensor to report an implausibly high voltage signal.

Check the cause
Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor live raw voltage and physical pressure values of the P3 Exhaust Pressure Sensor, comparing engine off to running.
Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the P3 exhaust pressure sensor for rubbed wires, corrosion, or a short-to-power.
Check the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) or Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) for heavy soot accumulation or plugging causing physical restriction.
Inspect the Electronic Variable Geometry Turbocharger (EVGT) actuator for stuck vanes creating excessive exhaust backpressure.

Verify the Code
Connect the diagnostic tool and confirm that code 3644 is active. Check for related codes (e.g., EVGT actuator codes or DPF restriction codes) which might point to the root cause.
Test the Sensor Circuit
Disconnect the P3 exhaust pressure sensor. Check the reference voltage and ground at the connector. If the wiring is shorted, repair the harness.
Inspect the Sensor Tube
Remove the sensor and inspect the metal tube connecting the sensor to the exhaust manifold. Carbon buildup can plug this tube, causing erratic or trapped pressure readings. Clean the tube with a wire brush and solvent if restricted.
Replace the Sensor
If the wiring is good, the tube is clear, and the sensor is still reporting an out-of-range high value at rest, replace the P3 Exhaust Pressure Sensor.
Address Physical Restrictions
If the sensor is accurately reporting high pressure, perform a forced DPF regeneration using the service tool to clear exhaust soot. If the turbocharger vanes are mechanically seized, the turbocharger or actuator assembly will need to be cleaned or replaced.
Clear and Test
Clear the fault codes from the EDC. Run the machine under a heavy load (e.g., hydraulic stall or dynamometer) to ensure the exhaust pressure remains within normal operating limits and the code does not return.
