Case IH 3645 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): P3 pressure errors in EPCtl - Exhaust Pressure upstream Turbine too high
Issue description
The engine's control system has detected that the exhaust gas backpressure located just before (upstream of) the turbocharger turbine has exceeded the maximum allowable threshold, pointing to a restriction in the exhaust system, a malfunctioning turbocharger, or a faulty pressure sensor.

Check the cause
Check the muffler, diesel particulate filter (DPF), and catalytic converter (if equipped) for physical damage, dents, or severe blockages that could cause excessive exhaust backpressure.
Ensure that all exhaust gas piping is mounted correctly, not crushed, and free of internal obstructions.
Inspect the exhaust pressure sensor (upstream of the turbine) to ensure it is installed correctly. Check the sensor's wiring harness and connector for corrosion, shorts, or open circuits.
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the diagnostic port. Monitor the live data from the exhaust pressure sensor to check for accuracy and erratic voltage spikes.

Connect Diagnostic Tool
Hook up the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to confirm code 3645 is active and check for any accompanying codes (such as catalyst or temperature sensor faults).
Clear Exhaust Restrictions
If the physical inspection reveals a collapsed exhaust pipe or a clogged muffler/catalyst, repair or replace the restricted exhaust component.
Replace the Sensor
If the exhaust system is physically clear but the EST shows the sensor is reading artificially high pressure, the sensor has failed internally. Disconnect the wiring harness, unthread the faulty exhaust pressure sensor from the exhaust manifold/turbine inlet, and install the new sensor.
Re-test and Clear Codes
After the repair is completed, use the EST to erase the fault codes. The engine must be brought up to operating temperature and run under load (e.g., using hydraulics over relief or a dynamometer) to verify that the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and exhaust systems are operating properly and the code does not return.
