3646

Case IH 3646 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / CNH EDC: Multi signal defects in Pressure Charger Regulator (PCR)

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has determined that at least two of the sensors relevant to the PCR procedures (turbine speed sensor, boost pressure sensor, and exhaust gas pressure sensor) are simultaneously reporting defective, out-of-range, or implausible signals.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Steiger Tractors
  • Case IH Magnum series tractors
  • Case IH Puma series tractors

Check the cause

  1. Check for associated fault codes using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to identify if individual sensors are failing

  2. Inspect the engine wiring harness for chafing, corrosion, or a shared ground/reference voltage issue affecting the turbine speed, boost pressure, and exhaust gas pressure sensors

  3. Check the engine air intake system and verify the air filter is not severely blocked or restricted, which can cause implausible pressure readings

  4. Use the EST to monitor live data for turbine speed, boost pressure, and exhaust gas pressure to determine which signals are dropping out or reading implausibly

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Hook up the EST and pull all active and stored fault codes.

  2. Address Individual Faults First

If there are specific fault codes present for the boost pressure sensor, turbine speed sensor, or exhaust gas pressure sensor, you must correct those individual errors first.

  3. Inspect and Repair Wiring

Trace the wiring harness connecting the ECU to the turbocharger sensors. Repair any broken wires, clean corroded connectors, and ensure the 5V reference and ground circuits are intact.

  4. Replace Faulty Sensors

If the wiring is intact but live data shows a sensor is dead or reading out of physical range (e.g., short-circuited), replace the defective sensor(s).

  5. Clear Codes

Once the physical repairs are made, clear all fault codes from the ECU memory.

  6. Road Test

Perform a test run under load (parameter acquisition) to ensure the turbocharger control system operates correctly and the 3646 code does not return.
