Case IH 3648 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Turbocharger Boost Pressure Higher Than Desired Target

Issue description

This code indicates an overboost condition where the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the actual intake manifold boost pressure is exceeding the commanded target pressure.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • skid steer
  • Farmall 80N
  • Farmall 80V
  • Farmall 85C
  • Farmall 90N
  • Farmall 95C
  • SR250
  • SV250
  • SV300
  • TR320
  • TV380
  • Steiger
  • Magnum

Check the cause

  1. Physically inspect the turbocharger wastegate actuator and linkage to see if it is seized or sticking in the closed position.

  2. Check the intake manifold boost pressure sensor for heavy soot buildup or blockages, and verify its wiring harness for shorts, opens, or corrosion.

  3. Inspect the exhaust pressure sensor and its connecting tube to ensure it is not clogged with carbon or soot.

Repair steps

  1. Read Live Data

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine. Monitor the live data for both the Boost Pressure Sensor and the Exhaust Pressure Sensor with the engine off (key on). Both should read atmospheric pressure. If either sensor reads out of range, replace the faulty sensor.

  2. Inspect the Wastegate

With the engine cooled down, locate the turbocharger. Disconnect the wastegate actuator arm from the wastegate valve lever.

  3. Test Wastegate Movement

Manually move the wastegate lever. It should move freely without binding. If it is seized, attempt to free it using penetrating oil. Note: OEM service manuals state not to attempt to adjust or modify the wastegate actuator calibration.

  4. Replace Components

If the wastegate valve is permanently seized internally, or if the actuator has failed, the turbocharger assembly (or cartridge/actuator depending on availability) must be replaced. If the physical turbocharger is fine, replace the sensor(s) that failed the live data test.

  5. Clear and Test

Reconnect all harnesses and linkages. Clear the fault code 3648 from the Engine ECU. Perform a test run under load to verify that the actual boost pressure now matches the desired target pressure without triggering the code.
