Case IH 3650 – Engine Controller (EDC): Battery Voltage Incorrect. Check Alternator, Or EDC.
Issue description
This code indicates that the voltage being supplied to the engine's electronic control system is outside of the expected operating range (either too high or too low). The system flags the battery, the alternator (charging system), or the EDC itself as the likely culprits.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- skid steer
- Case IH Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
- Case IH Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
- Case IH Tractors (Farmall and JX series)
Check the cause
Check the resting voltage of the battery (should be ~12.6V) and perform a load test to ensure it doesn't have a dead cell.
Start the engine and check the alternator output voltage at the battery terminals (should read between 13.5V and 14.5V).
Inspect the heavy-gauge cables running from the alternator to the battery, and the engine wiring harness connecting to the EDC for corrosion, loose grounds, or chafed wires.
Ensure the main harness connector at the Engine Controller (EDC) is seated tightly and free of moisture or pin corrosion.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before servicing electrical components.
Clean Connections
If diagnostic checks revealed loose or corroded battery terminals or ground straps, clean them with a wire brush, reattach securely, and clear the fault code to see if it returns.
Replace the Alternator
If the alternator failed the output test, remove the serpentine/drive belt, disconnect the electrical connections at the rear of the alternator, and unbolt it from the engine bracket. Install the new alternator, tension the belt to factory specs, and reconnect the wiring.
Replace the Battery
If the battery failed a load test, swap it out for a new 12V heavy-duty equipment battery.
Address the EDC
If the battery, alternator, and wiring harness all test perfectly fine, the EDC (Engine Controller) itself may have an internal fault reading the voltage incorrectly. The EDC will need to be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.
