Case IH 3655 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Torque limitation, Engine protection: General report of the event of torque limitations

This is an informational and protective code indicating that the engine controller has intentionally reduced engine torque (by limiting fuel injection) to protect the engine from catastrophic damage due to another critical fault, such as excessive exhaust gas temperature, coolant overheating, high fuel temperature, or a heavily loaded DPF.

   Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible heavy-duty OBD scanner to the machine's diagnostic port.

   Scan the Engine ECU/EDC for all active and stored fault codes.

   Look specifically for primary codes related to the DPF (e.g., Code 3656 for DPF load), temperature sensors (coolant, exhaust gas, fuel), or fuel rail pressure, as these are the most common triggers for engine protection derates.

   Read All Codes

   Pull the full list of DTCs from the Engine ECU.

   Isolate the Root Cause

   Ignore code 3655 for the moment. Identify the other active fault code(s) that triggered the engine protection mode.

   Repair the Primary Fault

   Follow the OEM service manual troubleshooting steps for the primary fault code. For example, if a DPF restriction code is present, perform a forced regeneration or replace the DPF. If a coolant temperature sensor is reading out of range, test the wiring harness and replace the sensor.

   Clear Codes

   Once the root cause is repaired, use the diagnostic tool to clear all fault codes, including 3655.

   Test Run

   Operate the machine under load to verify that the primary fault does not return and that the engine has full power (no torque limitation).
