3656

Case IH 3656 – Engine ECU: Torque limitation, Engine protection: Torque limitation caused by particulate filter

Issue description

The engine control module has placed the machine into a 'derate' condition (limiting engine torque and power) to protect the engine. This protective measure is triggered because the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) has reached a critical soot load, is severely restricted, or has failed to regenerate properly.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • SR175
  • SR250
  • SV300
  • Tractors
  • Maxxum
  • Steiger
  • Quantum V/F series

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active DPF-related fault codes (e.g., codes relating to DPF pressure, soot levels, or exhaust temperatures) as 3656 is a protective derate.

  2. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the current DPF soot mass/load percentage.

  3. Inspect the DPF Delta Pressure Sensor and its connecting hoses for cracks, melting, or clogs that can send false restriction signals.

  4. Verify DPF intake and exhaust temperature sensors are reading correctly and can reach required temperatures (often over 800°C during regen).

Repair steps

  1. Attempt Forced Regeneration

Connect your diagnostic service tool and initiate a forced (manual) DPF regeneration.

  2. Evaluate Regeneration Results

If the regeneration completes successfully and the soot level drops to a normal range, clear the fault codes and test drive the machine under load. If the diagnostic tool indicates 'Soot Mass Above Limit' or locks out the forced regeneration, the DPF is beyond in-situ recovery.

  3. Clean or Replace the DPF

If the filter is critically clogged with soot or ash, physically remove the DPF assembly. It must either be sent to a specialized facility for professional ash cleaning or replaced entirely.

  4. Replace Faulty Sensors

If diagnostic checks revealed implausible readings from the differential pressure sensor or temperature sensors, replace them during the DPF service.

  5. Reset the ECU

After cleaning or replacing the DPF, use the diagnostic tool to perform a 'DPF Reset' or tell the ECU that a new filter has been installed. This resets the soot accumulator algorithms. Clear all fault codes.
