Case IH 3659 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Battery voltage : Power stage diagnosis could be disabled due to high Battery voltage

Issue description

The control module has detected that the system's electrical supply voltage has exceeded the maximum safe threshold. To protect its internal circuitry, the module disables the power stage diagnostics. This is typically caused by an overcharging alternator (faulty voltage regulator) or a severe short-to-power in the wiring harness.

Check the cause

  1. Resting Battery Voltage Test: With the machine off, measure the battery voltage at the terminals using a multimeter. A healthy 12V system should read between 12.4V and 12.8V.

  2. Running Voltage / Alternator Output Test: Start the engine and measure the voltage across the battery terminals. If the voltage exceeds 14.5V - 15.0V, the alternator's voltage regulator is overcharging the system.

  3. Harness and Connection Inspection: Inspect the main power connections, ground cables, and the wiring harness leading to the Engine ECU. Look for damaged insulation that could be causing a short-to-power.

  4. Battery Condition Check: Overcharging can boil the battery electrolyte. Check the battery for swelling, acid leaks, or a cloudy/brownish electrolyte (if caps are removable), which indicates sulfation and internal damage.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable before beginning any electrical repairs.

  2. Replace the Alternator

    If the running voltage test confirmed an overcharge condition, the internal voltage regulator has failed. Remove the drive belt, disconnect the electrical connections at the rear of the alternator, unbolt the unit, and install the replacement alternator.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If the alternator tested fine but a short was found in the harness, splice and heat-shrink the damaged wires, or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Replace the Battery

    If the battery was damaged by the high voltage (boiled over or failed a load test), replace it to prevent future electrical anomalies.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and verify that the running voltage is now within the normal specification (approx. 13.5V - 14.2V). Use a diagnostic service tool to clear fault code 3659 from the Engine ECU.
