Case IH 3662 – Engine ECU (EDC): EGR Control : EGR governor deviation positive error (SPN 282, FMI 3)

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the actual physical position of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is deviating from the commanded position in a "positive" direction. This typically means the valve is stuck open, opening further than requested, or the internal position sensor is sending an incorrect high-voltage signal back to the closed-loop control system (the "governor").

   Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the EGR valve for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins that could cause a short circuit or open load

   Remove the EGR valve and inspect it for heavy soot or carbon buildup (carbon packing is the most common cause of the valve sticking open)

   Verify that the EGR valve actuator is receiving proper battery voltage and ground from the ECU

   Use the Electronic Service Tool (CNH EST) to perform an active sweep test of the EGR valve (0% to 100%) and monitor the position sensor feedback

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical shorts and ensure safety.

   Locate the Valve

   Locate the EGR valve assembly, typically mounted on the exhaust manifold or intake manifold side of the engine, connected to the EGR cooler piping.

   Disconnect Electricals

   Unplug the electrical connector from the EGR valve actuator.

   Remove the Valve

   Remove the mounting bolts securing the EGR valve to the manifold and cooler pipes. Carefully remove the valve.

   Clean or Replace

   If the valve is heavily caked in carbon but otherwise mechanically sound, thoroughly clean it using an approved EGR/carbon solvent. Ensure the valve flap moves freely without binding. If the valve is mechanically damaged, the internal motor/sensor has failed, or cleaning does not resolve the binding, the assembly must be replaced.

   Reinstallation

   Install the new (or cleaned) EGR valve using new gaskets. Never reuse old metal EGR gaskets as they will leak exhaust gas.

   Torque

   Torque the mounting bolts to the specific OEM specifications for your engine model.

   Reconnect

   Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery.

   Clear Codes

   Connect a diagnostic tool, clear the inactive 3662 fault code, and run the engine to operating temperature to verify the repair.
