Case IH 3663 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): EGR Command Saturation Over Higher Threshold

The positive limit of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve governor deviation has been exceeded. The engine controller is commanding the EGR valve to open or close to a specific position, but the desired position cannot be reached. This is most commonly caused by the EGR valve sticking or binding internally (usually due to heavy carbon buildup) or a mismatched/failed EGR valve position sensor.

   Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify that fault code 3663 is currently ACTIVE.

   Check for multiple CAN Bus fault codes. If present, diagnose and repair the CAN bus circuit first, as communication loss can trigger false valve positioning errors.

   Verify that the wiring harness and connectors between the ECU and the EGR valve are free of damage. Inspect connectors for bent pins, corrosion, or moisture.

   Perform a wiggle test by starting and operating the machine while wiggling the harness to reveal any intermittent electrical conditions.

   Clear fault codes

   Clear the fault codes from the modules using the EST and retest the system to see if the code returns.

   Diagnose mechanical binding

   If the code returns and the wiring/connectors have been verified as good, the issue is mechanical binding inside the EGR assembly.

   Remove EGR valve

   Remove the EGR valve assembly from the engine block.

   Inspect EGR valve

   Inspect the valve for severe carbon buildup or mechanical binding. A sticking valve with a mismatched position sensor usually requires full replacement.

   Install new EGR valve

   Install the new EGR Control Valve using a new EGR valve gasket.

   Reconnect wiring

   Reconnect the wiring harness.

   Restore self-learning parameters

   Connect the EST and follow the appropriate service tool procedure to restore engine self-learning parameters so the ECU can calibrate to the new EGR valve's position sensor.

   Verify repair

   Clear the fault codes and run the engine to verify the repair.
