Case IH 3663 – Engine ECU (EDC): EGR Command Saturation Over Higher Threshold
Issue description
The positive limit of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve governor deviation has been exceeded. The engine controller is commanding the EGR valve to move to a specific position, but the feedback signal shows it has reached a saturation point above the maximum expected threshold, meaning the desired EGR valve position cannot be reached.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the EGR valve and the Engine ECU for chafed wires, melted insulation, or loose connections
Disconnect the EGR valve and check the pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent terminals
Use a multimeter to check for short circuits to the battery, short circuits to the ground, or open loads in the EGR valve harness
Remove the EGR valve and inspect it for heavy carbon/soot buildup to check for physical binding
Repair steps
Prep the Machine
Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Drain Coolant
Depending on the exact engine configuration, drain a small amount of coolant from the system to prevent spills.
Disconnect Electricals
Unplug the electrical connector from the EGR valve actuator.
Remove Coolant Lines
Disconnect the coolant feed and return lines from the EGR valve housing.
Remove the EGR Flex Pipe
Unbolt and remove the EGR flex pipe. Note: OEM service manuals state it is mandatory to replace the gaskets every time the EGR flex pipe is removed.
Remove the EGR Valve
Remove the mounting bolts securing the EGR valve to the manifold/cooler assembly and lift the valve out.
Clean Passages
Inspect the intake manifold and EGR cooler passages for excessive carbon buildup. Clean the mating surfaces thoroughly.
Install the New Valve
Install the new EGR valve using a new OEM gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specification.
Reassemble
Reinstall the EGR flex pipe (with new gaskets), reconnect the coolant lines, and plug in the electrical connector.
Refill and Bleed
Refill the engine coolant and bleed the cooling system of any air pockets.
Software Calibration
Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic service tool to clear the fault codes and perform an 'EGR Valve Learn Cycle' to restore the ECU's self-learning parameters for the new valve's position sensor.
