3666

Case IH 3666 – Engine Controller / Engine ECU: Desired EGR Valve Position Can Not Be Reached (EGR Valve Sticks, Position Sensor Mismatched)

Issue description

This code indicates a permanent governor deviation for the valve. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is commanding the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve to a specific position, but the feedback from the valve's position sensor does not match the requested target. This typically means the valve is physically sticking (often due to carbon buildup) or there is an electrical mismatch/failure in the position sensor.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • Farmall
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Steiger

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying EGR circuit codes (e.g., 3667, 3668, or 3675) that might indicate an electrical short, open circuit, or blocked valve rather than a mechanical stick.

  2. Remove the EGR valve and visually inspect it for heavy soot or carbon buildup that could cause the internal flap or pintle to bind.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and pins connecting the Engine ECU to the EGR valve position sensor for corrosion, backed-out pins, or chafing.

Repair steps

  1. Remove and Inspect/Clean

Disconnect the battery. Remove the EGR valve from the engine block. If it is heavily carbon-fouled, you may attempt to clean it with an appropriate solvent, though replacement is standard protocol for permanent deviation faults.

  2. Replace the Valve

If the valve is mechanically bound or the internal position sensor has failed, install a new EGR valve.

  3. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery and use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes.

  4. Restore Self-Learning Parameters

Use the EST software to reset the EGR learned values so the ECU can calibrate the minimum and maximum stops of the new valve. Failing to do this will likely keep the machine in derate/limp mode.
