Case IH 3666 – Engine ECU: EGR Permanent Governor Deviation for Valve

Issue description

The engine control system is commanding the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve to move to a specific position, but the valve is failing to reach it.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • SR175
  • SV series
  • Farmall series
  • Maxxum series

Check the cause

  1. Remove and inspect the EGR valve for mechanical binding, heavy carbon-fouling, and physical sticking

  2. Check the EGR position sensor for accurate readings, as a mismatched sensor will trigger this code

  3. Test the wiring harness to the EGR valve for intactness and proper voltage, checking for open loads, over-temperature, or short circuits

Repair steps

  1. Access the EGR System

Locate the EGR valve on the engine exhaust/intake manifold assembly.

  2. Remove the EGR Valve

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the EGR valve actuator. Unbolt the valve from the EGR cooler/manifold lines.

  3. Inspect/Clean or Replace

If the valve is jammed with soot and cannot be safely freed, or if the internal position sensor has failed, the EGR valve must be replaced.

  4. Install the New Valve

Bolt the new EGR valve into place and reconnect the electrical harness.

  5. Software Reset

Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) and 'Follow The Appropriate Service Tool Procedure To Restore Engine Self Learning Parameters.' You must configure and reset the ECU data for the new EGR valve so the engine learns its new end-stops.
