Case IH 3669 – Engine Controller (EDC / Engine ECU): EGR Valve Circuit - Short Circuit To Battery (A = 60pin Connector - Engine; A50)

Issue description

The engine control system has detected a short circuit to battery voltage on the "Out 1" circuit of the H-bridge that controls the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve actuator.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the engine wiring harness between the EGR valve actuator and the Engine Controller's 60-pin connector for chafed wires, melted insulation, or rubbing against the engine block.

  2. Disconnect the 60-pin connector at the Engine ECU and the connector at the EGR valve, then test the wire corresponding to pin A50 for a short to battery voltage.

  3. Check the EGR valve connector and the ECU connector for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent/pushed-out pins that could bridge power circuits.

  4. If the wiring harness tests good (no short to battery found in the wires), conclude that the short circuit is likely internal to the H-bridge circuit inside the EGR valve's electronic actuator.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical damage during the repair.

  2. Access the Valve

    Remove the engine cover/access panels to reach the intake manifold area.

  3. Disconnect Electrical

    Unplug the electrical harness connector from the EGR valve actuator.

  4. Remove Hardware

    Loosen the fastening screws holding the EGR valve support.

  5. Disconnect Piping

    Using pliers, release the relevant clips securing the EGR pipes to the EGR valve housing.

  6. Remove Valve

    Remove the faulty EGR valve assembly from the intake manifold.

  7. Install New Valve

    Place the new EGR valve assembly onto the intake manifold. Tighten the front side and valve support fastening screws to the prescribed torque.

  8. Reconnect Piping

    Reconnect the EGR pipes to the valve housing and securely tighten the clips.

  9. Reconnect Electrical

    Plug the wiring harness back into the new EGR valve actuator.

  10. Restore Parameters

    Reconnect the battery. You must use the appropriate Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault code and restore the engine's self-learning parameters.
