Case IH 3680 (DTC E536) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECM internal failure - Engine speed limitation via fuel injection cut off is active

The engine has been commanded into a severe protective derate mode. The system is actively limiting engine speed and power by cutting off fuel injection. This is often a secondary code that triggers when a critical primary fault (such as a major SCR/DEF system failure, extreme exhaust temperatures, or blow-by) forces the engine to shut down or limit power to prevent catastrophic damage. If no other codes are present, it indicates an internal failure of the ECM itself.

   Check for primary fault codes related to the SCR/DEF system, DOC/SCR temperature sensors, or engine blow-by, as these are often the root cause triggering the injection cut-off.

   Inspect the ECM wiring harnesses and connectors for corrosion, moisture, or damaged pins that could cause an internal communication failure.

   Connect the electronic service tool and attempt to flash/reprogram the ECM with a proper, updated dataset.

   Reprogram the ECM

   Using the Case IH electronic service tool, attempt to re-flash the ECM with the latest software dataset.

   Evaluate

   If the defect initialization clears and the fuel injection power stage activates normally, the repair is complete. If the shut-off persists and the code remains active, the ECM has suffered a hard internal failure and must be replaced.

   Remove the ECM

   Disconnect the machine's battery. Disconnect the main wiring harness connectors from the ECM. Remove the mounting hardware and extract the faulty ECM.

   Install the New ECM

   Mount the replacement ECM and secure the hardware. Reconnect the wiring harnesses and reconnect the battery.

   Program and Calibrate

   Connect the service tool to the new ECM. You must program the module with the correct machine dataset and follow the appropriate engine service tool procedure to restore self-learning parameters.

   Test

   Clear all inactive codes and run the engine to verify that full power is restored and the injection cut-off is no longer active.
