Case IH 3688 – ENGINE: Water sensor in the fuel filter: WIF Sensor Check is failed

Issue description

Triggers when the sensor detects water contamination in the diesel fuel system that needs to be drained, or when the sensor circuit itself fails its internal diagnostic check (e.g., due to a wiring issue or a faulty sensor).

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • skid steer
  • Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • SV185B
  • SR175
  • 580N
  • 580SN
  • 590SN

Check the cause

  1. Check the primary fuel filter/water separator for actual water accumulation

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and the connector leading to the WIF sensor at the bottom of the fuel filter for loose pins, corrosion, or broken wires

  3. Check the sensor voltage and circuit to ensure it is not shorted to ground or open

Repair steps

  1. Locate filter

Locate the primary fuel filter/water separator assembly on the engine.

  2. Drain water

Place a suitable drain pan under the filter. Open the drain valve at the bottom of the filter to drain any accumulated water and sediment.

  3. Test engine

Close the valve, prime the fuel system if necessary, and start the engine to see if the fault code clears.

  4. Verify sensor failure

If the code persists and the wiring harness/connector has been verified as intact, the WIF sensor itself has failed.

  5. Disconnect sensor

Disconnect the electrical connector from the WIF sensor.

  6. Remove sensor

Unscrew the faulty WIF sensor from the bottom of the fuel filter.

  7. Install new sensor

Install the new WIF sensor (ensure the O-ring is properly seated) and reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Clear codes

Clear the fault codes from the Engine ECU and verify the repair.
