Case IH 3696 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Failure in Cylinder 2 Glow Plug Circuit
Issue description
Fault code 3696 indicates a failure in the glow plug circuit for Cylinder 2.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- skid steer
- Case IH SR250
- Case IH TR270
- Case IH Farmall series (65A, 75A, 105A, 115A)
- Case IH JX series (JX60 to JX100U)
- Case IH Quantum series
- Case IH AVJ/VJ series
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the cylinder 2 glow plug for chafing, corrosion, or disconnection.
Test the cylinder 2 glow plug circuit for an open load, short circuit to ground, or short circuit to the battery.
Measure the resistance of the cylinder 2 glow plug itself using a multimeter. An open circuit (infinite resistance) confirms the heating element inside the plug has failed.
Verify there are no accompanying codes for the Glow Plug Control Unit (such as code 3692 for power stage overtemperature or 3689 for communication errors), which would indicate a module failure rather than a faulty plug.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts while working on the engine.
Locate the Component
Locate the glow plugs on the engine cylinder head. Identify the glow plug for cylinder 2 (cylinders are typically numbered sequentially from the front of the engine).
Remove the Connector
Carefully unplug the electrical connector or remove the retaining nut securing the wire to the cylinder 2 glow plug.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the area around the base of the glow plug to prevent dirt or debris from falling into the open cylinder bore.
Remove the Glow Plug
Using an appropriate deep socket, carefully unscrew and extract the faulty glow plug.
Install the New Plug
Thread the new glow plug in by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Reassemble
Reattach the electrical connector/wire to the new glow plug and reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes
Use a diagnostic service tool to clear the inactive 3696 fault code from the EDC and cycle the ignition to ensure the code does not return.
