Case IH 3697 – ENGINE Controller / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Glow Plugs: Array of DFCs for Failure in Cylinder 3 Glow Plug

The system has detected a failure, open load, or short circuit specifically in the glow plug circuit for engine cylinder 3.

   Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors running from the Engine Controller / Glow Plug Control Unit to the Cylinder 3 glow plug. Look for chafed wires, corrosion, or disconnected terminals.

   Resistance Test: Disconnect the electrical connector at the Cylinder 3 glow plug and use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the plug to the engine ground. An open circuit (infinite resistance) or a dead short indicates a failed glow plug.

   Voltage Test: Check for proper voltage reaching the Cylinder 3 glow plug connector when the key is turned to the 'ON' (pre-heat) position.

   Check Related Codes: Look for accompanying codes that might indicate a broader system failure, such as 3689 (Communication Error Between Glow Plug Unit and Engine Controller), 3692 (Glow Plug Circuit Power Stage Overtemperature), or 3416 (Short Circuit in Cylinder 3 Glow Plug).

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts while working on the electrical system.

   Locate the Glow Plug

   Locate the glow plug for Cylinder 3 on the engine cylinder head. You may need to remove the air cleaner housing or upper radiator hose for better access depending on the machine.

   Remove the Connector

   Carefully remove the wire clamp/electrical connection from the top of the Cylinder 3 glow plug.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the base of the glow plug using compressed air to prevent dirt and debris from falling into the engine cylinder.

   Remove the Glow Plug

   Using a deep socket, carefully unscrew and remove the faulty glow plug from the cylinder head.

   Install the New Glow Plug

   Thread the new glow plug in by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it to the OEM specified torque.

   Reassemble

   Reconnect the electrical wire clamp to the new glow plug. Reinstall any hoses or housings that were removed for access.

   Test

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position to allow the glow plug control unit to cycle. Use a diagnostic service tool to clear the 3697 fault code, start the engine, and verify the code does not return.
