Case IH 3699 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): ECU EEPROM memory failure - EEPData1 block

Issue description

There is an error in the EEPROM block 'EEPData1' and the SD correction cannot be calculated. This indicates the engine controller has suffered an internal memory corruption or a physical hardware failure in its memory chip, preventing it from reading or writing critical engine operating data.

Check the cause

  1. Check system voltage: Inspect battery terminals, chassis grounds, and main harness connections to the ECU for corrosion or looseness, as voltage spikes or drops can cause temporary EEPROM errors.

  2. Scan and clear: Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify if the code is active or stored, and attempt to clear it to see if it was a transient memory glitch.

  3. Attempt a re-flash: Using the EST, attempt to update or re-flash the Engine ECU software. If the EEPROM is only logically corrupted, a re-flash might recover the memory block.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Locate the ECU

    Locate the Engine Control Unit, typically mounted directly to the side of the engine block on FPT F5C/F5H engines.

  3. Remove the ECU

    Carefully release the locking levers on the main wiring harness connectors and unplug them from the ECU. Remove the mounting bolts securing the ECU to the engine and remove the unit.

  4. Install the New ECU

    Mount the replacement ECU and tighten the bolts. Carefully reconnect the wiring harness connectors, ensuring the locking levers seat fully.

  5. Reconnect Power

    Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  6. Program the New ECU

    Connect the Case IH EST laptop to the machine's diagnostic port. A new ECU is shipped blank or with base software.

  7. Flash and Calibrate

    Flash the correct software dataset for your specific machine and engine trim level. You will also need to manually program the specific Injector Adjustment Codes (IQA/trim codes) for all cylinders into the new ECU so the engine fuels correctly.
