37

Case IH 37 – Transmission ECM: Clutch Pedal Switch (1) Open Circuit

Issue description

A mismatch between the clutch switch and the clutch potentiometer. The ECM logs the fault if the clutch pedal is released (switch should be closed) for 1 second, but the Clutch Pedal Potentiometer is reading above 30% travel, while the Power Shuttle FNR Lever is not in neutral. This disables the Clutch Pedal and Shuttle Lever.

Check the cause

  1. Check for cascading codes: Error Code 37 may be triggered by Error Code 11. Address Code 11 first if present.

  2. Inspect the clutch pedal switch for an open circuit (it should close when the pedal is released).

  3. Test the clutch pedal potentiometer using a multimeter or diagnostic tool to monitor the voltage sweep, ensuring it returns well below 30% when the pedal is fully released.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the clutch pedal switch, potentiometer, and Transmission ECM (specifically ECM connector 2) for breaks, corrosion, or loose pins.

Repair steps

  1. Park and prepare the tractor

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Locate components

Locate the clutch pedal switch and clutch pedal potentiometer assembly at the pivot point/base of the clutch pedal inside the cab.

  3. Disconnect harness

Disconnect the electrical harness from the clutch pedal switch.

  4. Test and replace switch

Using a multimeter, verify continuity across the switch terminals. If the switch fails to close the circuit when the pedal is in the released position, the switch is faulty and must be replaced.

  5. Test and replace potentiometer

If the switch functions correctly, test the potentiometer. If it has dead spots or fails to return to the correct resting voltage (causing the >30% reading), remove and replace the potentiometer.

  6. Install and reconnect

Install the new switch or potentiometer and reconnect the wiring harness.

  7. Clear fault codes

Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position to clear the fault codes.

  8. Calibrate transmission/clutch pedal

Perform a transmission/clutch pedal calibration procedure. Because the ECM relies on exact voltage parameters from the potentiometer to determine clutch engagement percentages, a new sensor must be calibrated to the ECM so it learns the new 0% and 100% travel baselines.
