Case IH 3702 – ENGINE ECU (EDC - Electronic Diesel Control module): Injection control: Detection of Failed Engine Start
Issue description
This code is triggered when the engine fails to start because it cannot maintain a sufficient starting speed or because there is insufficient fuel rail pressure. The system detects that the parameters required for a successful engine start (cranking RPM and minimum fuel pressure) have not been met.
Applies to these machines
11 machines- Farmall
- Puma
- Maxxum
- Magnum
- Steiger
- 2300 series
- 2500 series
- 2388
- 2588
- L series loaders
- C series loaders
Check the cause
Fuel Supply Pressure Test: Check the low-pressure fuel system. Vacuum between the inlet of the low-pressure lift pump and the fuel tank should not exceed 127 mm (5 inches) of Hg.
High-Pressure Test: Fuel supply pressures between the fuel filter and the inlet to the high-pressure injection pump should be a minimum of 5 bar (72 psi) during cranking/loaded/unloaded states.
Rail Pressure Check: Monitor the fuel rail pressure sensor via a diagnostic tool to ensure minimum rail pressure is being achieved during cranking.
Engine Speed Check: Verify that the engine speed sensor (crankshaft/camshaft) is reading a sufficient and steady RPM signal while the engine is cranking.
Visual & Physical Inspections: Check for severe fuel leaks, air intrusion in the fuel lines, and inspect the fuel filters for water or heavy clogging.
Repair steps
Verify Fuel Quality and Level
Ensure the tank has adequate, uncontaminated diesel fuel.
Service Fuel Filters
Replace both the primary and secondary fuel filters if they are clogged or if water is present.
Bleed the Fuel System
Purge any trapped air from the fuel lines, as air intrusion will prevent the rail from building minimum pressure.
Test and Replace the Lift Pump
If the low-pressure vacuum/pressure tests fail (cannot maintain 5 bar / 72 psi), replace the fuel lift pump.
Test and Replace the Rail Pressure Sensor / Relief Valve
If low-pressure supply is good but the rail is not building pressure, test the fuel rail pressure sensor and the pressure relief valve. Replace if faulty.
Inspect Engine Speed Sensors
If fuel pressure is adequate but the engine still fails to register starting speed, inspect the wiring harness and replace the engine speed sensor.
Clear Codes
Once the faulty component is replaced and the engine starts, clear the EDC fault codes using a diagnostic tool.
