Case IH 3703 – Engine Control Unit (EDC / Engine ECU): Injection control: check of minimum rail pressure.

Issue description

The minimum fuel rail pressure value necessary to allow fuel injection has not been reached. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the high-pressure fuel system cannot build or maintain the required pressure to operate the injectors.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the fuel tank is not empty and that the fuel is free of heavy water or debris contamination

  2. Check for leaking low-pressure fuel tubes, loose fittings, or air ingress into the fuel system

  3. Check for clogged primary or secondary fuel filters, which will restrict supply to the high-pressure pump

  4. Test the electric pre-supply pump or mechanical gear pump to ensure it is delivering adequate low-pressure fuel

  5. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors for the Pressure Control Valve (PCV) and the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor for shorts, opens, or corrosion

  6. Determine if the Pressure Control Valve (PCV) is stuck in the open position, bleeding off rail pressure

Repair steps

  1. Prime the System

    Ensure the tank has fuel and prime the low-pressure fuel system to bleed out any air.

  2. Replace Fuel Filters

    If the maintenance history is unknown, replace the primary (water separator) and secondary fuel filters to eliminate restriction as the cause of low pressure.

  3. Test Lift Pump Pressure

    Connect a mechanical pressure gauge to the low-pressure circuit. If the lift pump is not meeting OEM specifications, replace the lift pump.

  4. Inspect the Fuel Pressure Relief Valve (PCV)

    If low-pressure supply is good, the issue is in the high-pressure rail. Remove the return line from the pressure relief valve on the fuel rail. Crank the engine; if a significant amount of fuel flows out of the relief valve during cranking, the valve is stuck open or has failed and must be replaced.

  5. Test the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor

    If the relief valve is holding pressure, use a diagnostic scan tool to monitor actual vs. desired rail pressure. If the sensor reads 0 or an erratic value despite physical pressure being present, replace the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor.

  6. Clear and Verify

    After replacing the faulty component, clear the 3703 fault code via the diagnostic tool, start the engine, and verify that rail pressure meets the minimum threshold under load.
