3707

Case IH 3707 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Lambda sensor: Open circuit at the lambda sensor Nernst cell pin

Issue description

This code indicates an electrical open circuit at the Nernst cell pin of the lambda (oxygen/O2) sensor. An open circuit means the control module has lost electrical continuity with this specific circuit, preventing it from accurately reading exhaust oxygen levels to manage emissions and fuel mixtures.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • Magnum
  • Steiger

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the lambda sensor for chafing, breaks, or melted wires caused by exhaust heat.

  2. Disconnect the lambda sensor connector and check for corrosion, bent pins, moisture, and ensure a tight connection.

  3. Perform a continuity test using a multimeter between the lambda sensor connector and the Engine ECU to verify if the open circuit is in the wiring harness.

  4. Measure the internal resistance of the lambda sensor's Nernst cell and heater circuits to check for an internal open circuit. If the sensor has an internal open circuit, it must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Ensure the tractor is turned off, the key is removed, and the exhaust system has completely cooled down to prevent severe burns.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Find the lambda (oxygen) sensor located on the exhaust system (usually near the DPF/SCR or exhaust manifold).

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the lambda sensor.

  4. Remove the Sensor

Use an oxygen sensor socket or a suitable wrench to unscrew the lambda sensor from the exhaust pipe. If it is seized, apply penetrating oil and allow it to sit before attempting removal.

  5. Install New Sensor

Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (if not pre-applied), being careful not to get any on the sensor tip. Thread it in by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  6. Reconnect Wiring

Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring it clicks into place securely. Route the wiring away from extreme heat sources.

  7. Clear Codes & Reset

Use a diagnostic tester/scan tool to clear the 3707 fault code from the EDC memory.

  8. Disable Performance Limiter

If the ECU activated a performance limiter (engine derate) due to this fault, use the diagnostic tool to disable the limiter.

  9. Test Drive

Start the engine and drive the vehicle under load to verify the repair and ensure the code does not return.
