Case IH 3709 – ENGINE ECU: Lambda sensor: Open circuit at the lambda sensor Virtual ground pin.
Issue description
The Lambda (O2) sensor is responsible for measuring the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gases. This fault code triggers when the control module detects a break in the electrical connection (an open circuit or open load) specifically on the virtual ground pin circuit of the sensor.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Farmall
- Puma
- Maxxum
- Skid Steers
- SR175
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Lambda sensor and the Engine ECU for chafed wires, corrosion, or backed-out pins, specifically focusing on the virtual ground pin.
Test the wiring for an open load in the VM or UN sensor circuits by verifying continuity from the sensor connector back to the ECU to rule out a broken wire.
Check the internal resistance of the sensor heater element with a multimeter. If it reads out of specification or as an open circuit, the sensor is internally defective.
Repair steps
Power down the machine and disconnect the battery for safety.
Locate the Lambda sensor on the exhaust system.
You may need to loosen or remove the exhaust system heat shield or bonnet support to gain access.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the Lambda sensor.
Carefully unscrew the defective Lambda sensor from the exhaust pipe/manifold.
Penetrating oil may be required if the sensor is seized.
Install the new Lambda sensor and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Reconnect the electrical connector and reinstall any heat shields or brackets that were removed.
Reconnect the battery.
Connect a diagnostic service tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the fault code and execute the "Reset ECU data (Lambda sensor)" configuration routine.
This allows the ECU to calibrate to the new sensor.
