Case IH 3710 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Lambda sensor: Fault to indicate Dynamics of the sensor signal too small

The Lambda (O2) sensor measures the oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas. This fault indicates that the sensor's signal dynamics (its response time or signal amplitude) are too small or sluggish. Essentially, the sensor is not reacting quickly enough to changes in the exhaust stream, which usually points to a heavily soot-fouled sensor, a degraded measuring cell, or high resistance in the sensor wiring.

   Check the entire wiring harness of the lambda sensor leading back to the ECU for chafed wires, melted insulation from exhaust heat, or loose/corroded pins at the connector.

   Remove the lambda sensor and inspect the tip. Heavy soot accumulation or white/gray ash deposits can insulate the sensor, causing the sluggish response.

   Ensure there are no exhaust leaks upstream of the lambda sensor, as outside air entering the exhaust stream can skew the oxygen readings and mimic a sluggish sensor.

   Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

   Disconnect the lambda sensor wiring harness connector.

   Using an O2 sensor socket, carefully unscrew the lambda sensor from the exhaust pipe/DPF assembly.

   Apply penetrating oil beforehand if the threads are seized.

   Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads of the new lambda sensor (if not pre-applied by the manufacturer).

   Do not get any compound on the sensor tip.

   Install the new lambda sensor and torque to OEM specifications.

   Reconnect the wiring harness and the battery.

   Connect a diagnostic tester (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool) and perform a "Reset ECU data (Lambda sensor)" procedure to clear the old learning values in the EEPROM.

   Crucial Step: Failure to reset the learning values may cause the ECU to continue operating on the faulty sensor's adapted parameters.
