Case IH 3717 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Lambda sensor : Oxygen concentration implausibly high in overrun

The Lambda (Oxygen/O2) sensor is reading an abnormally high concentration of oxygen in the exhaust gas during an 'overrun' condition (deceleration). This indicates either unmetered fresh air entering the exhaust stream or a failing sensor element.

   Inspect the exhaust manifold, turbocharger connections, and exhaust piping upstream of the Lambda sensor for leaks (cracks, blown gaskets, loose clamps) that could draw ambient air into the exhaust stream.

   Inspect the Lambda sensor's wiring harness and SPI chip connector for melted wires, chafing, or corrosion (especially if codes 3720 or 3721 are present, which indicate electrical failures).

   Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or EASy tool to monitor live data and check if the sensor is stuck lean or responds sluggishly to throttle changes.

   Preparation

   Turn off the engine, remove the key, and allow the exhaust system to cool completely to avoid burns.

   Disconnect

   Locate the Lambda sensor on the exhaust pipe/SCR housing. Carefully disconnect the sensor's electrical connector from the engine wiring harness.

   Removal

   Using a dedicated O2 sensor socket (usually 22mm or 7/8") or a wrench, unscrew the faulty Lambda sensor from the exhaust pipe.

   Thread Prep

   Inspect the threads in the exhaust bung. Clean them with a thread chaser if necessary. If the new sensor does not come with anti-seize pre-applied to the threads, apply a very small amount of high-temp anti-seize compound. Caution: Do not get any anti-seize on the sensor tip or slots, as this will permanently ruin the new sensor.

   Installation

   Thread the new Lambda sensor in by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it to the OEM torque specification (typically around 40-50 Nm, but refer to your specific engine manual).

   Reconnect

   Route the wiring harness away from extreme heat sources and reconnect it to the main harness.

   Clear and Test

   Connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool, clear the 3717 fault code, and perform a test drive. Ensure you bring the engine up to operating temperature and perform several deceleration (overrun) cycles to verify the code does not return.
