3729

Case IH 3729 – Engine ECU / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Fuel in oil detection : DFC to indicate that the fuel in oil has exceeded the warning limit.

Issue description

The engine's control system has detected severe fuel dilution in the engine oil. This condition dramatically reduces oil viscosity, which can lead to low oil pressure, high crankcase pressure, and catastrophic internal engine wear if not addressed immediately.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH tractors with FPT NEF engines

Check the cause

  1. Verify Oil Condition: Check the engine oil dipstick. An overfilled crankcase with a strong diesel odor and thin consistency confirms fuel dilution.

  2. Check Crankcase Pressure: Monitor for abnormally high crankcase pressure, which is a secondary symptom of this code.

  3. Fuel Supply Pressure Test: Connect a pressure gauge to the fuel system. The pressure should be a minimum of 5 bar (72 psi) with the engine loaded or unloaded.

  4. Air Ingress Test: Install a test line constructed with clear tubing at the inlet of the fuel injection pump to observe for air bubbles entering the system.

  5. Injector Leak-Off Test: Check the fuel leakage/return rate from the electronically controlled injectors to isolate excessively leaking injectors.

  6. High-Pressure Pump Check: Check the pressure control of the high-pressure pump inlet regulator and inspect the pump shaft seal, which can rupture and dump fuel directly into the engine timing gear housing/crankcase.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Leak

Based on the diagnostic tests, identify whether the fuel is entering the crankcase via a faulty high-pressure fuel pump seal or leaking electronic fuel injectors.

  2. Replace the Faulty Component

Remove and replace the leaking fuel injectors or the high-pressure fuel pump as dictated by the test results.

  3. Drain Contaminated Fluids

Drain the fuel-diluted engine oil completely from the oil pan.

  4. Replace Filters

Remove and replace the engine oil filter. (It is also recommended to replace the fuel pre-filter and main fuel filter during this service).

  5. Refill Oil

Refill the engine with the OEM-specified volume and weight of fresh engine oil.

  6. Prime and Clear

Prime the fuel system, start the engine, check for leaks, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 3729 fault code from the EDC.

Parts you might need

(5)
  • Electronic Fuel Injector(s)

Fitment: FPT NEF Engines. Replace if the leak-off test fails.

  • High-Pressure Fuel Pump

Fitment: FPT NEF Engines. Replace if the pump shaft seal is leaking into the gear train.

  • Engine Oil Filter

Must be replaced due to contamination.

  • Engine Oil

Must be replaced to restore proper oil viscosity.

  • Fuel Pre-filter / Water Separator

Recommended replacement during fuel system service.
