3730

Case IH 3730 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Soot in oil detection : DFC to indicate that the Soot in oil has exceeded the Max limit

Issue description

The engine control module has calculated that the engine oil has absorbed the maximum allowable amount of soot. When this limit is reached, the oil can no longer properly lubricate and protect the engine, and the machine may enter a derate or limp mode to prevent engine damage.

Applies to these machines

  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • Farmall series tractors
  • Maxxum series tractors
  • Magnum series tractors
  • Steiger series tractors

Check the cause

  1. Verify maintenance records to check the machine's operating hours and determine if it is due or overdue for a standard engine oil and filter change.

  2. Pull the dipstick to check the oil level and physical condition. Extremely thick, sludgy oil confirms the calculated soot value.

  3. Use a diagnostic tool to scan for other active emissions or DPF codes (e.g., code 3789 for regeneration duration). Frequent or failed DPF regenerations can cause excessive soot to bypass the rings and contaminate the oil prematurely.

  4. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to view the current 'calculated soot in oil' percentage.

Repair steps

  1. Warm Up and Drain

Run the engine briefly to warm the oil, then shut it down. Drain the soot-contaminated engine oil from the oil pan.

  2. Replace Filter

Remove and discard the old engine oil filter. Lubricate the gasket on the new filter and install it.

  3. Refill Oil

Refill the engine with the OEM-specified quantity and grade of engine oil (ensure it meets the low-ash requirements for emissions-controlled engines).

  4. Perform System Reset

Connect the Case IH EST (Electronic Service Tool) or a compatible heavy-duty aftermarket scanner (such as Jaltest). Simply changing the oil will not clear the code.

  5. Reset Soot Level

Navigate to the Engine ECU maintenance or aftertreatment menu and perform the 'Soot in Oil Reset' (or maintenance interval reset). This resets the ECU's calculated soot algorithm back to 0%.

  6. Clear Codes

Clear the inactive 3730 fault code from the ECU memory and verify the machine is no longer in a derated state.
