Case IH 3739 (DTC E13D) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): ECU internal failure - Loss of synchronization to MM from CPU
Issue description
The main processor (CPU) inside the engine controller has lost synchronization while attempting to send data bytes to the Monitoring Module (MM). This points to an internal hardware or software communication breakdown within the module's power stages for the fuel injectors.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- Axial-Flow Combines 240 Series (7240, 8240, 9240)
- Magnum
- Puma
- Steiger
- MXM series
Check the cause
Check for accompanying internal ECU fault codes (such as 3740, 3742, or 3743 - Undervoltage monitoring error) which may indicate a power issue rather than a failed module.
Inspect main power and ground pins at the EDC/ECU harness connector for severe voltage drops, loose battery connections, or corroded grounds.
Clear the DTCs and cycle the ignition to see if the code was caused by a momentary glitch.
Repair steps
Disconnect Battery Power
Always disconnect the machine's batteries before removing sensitive electronic modules.
Remove the Engine ECU (EDC)
Locate the EDC module on the engine block or firewall, disconnect the multi-pin wiring harnesses, and unbolt the module from its mounting bracket.
Install the Replacement ECU
Mount the new or remanufactured ECU and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses.
Reprogram the ECU
A certified Case IH technician must use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash the correct firmware and engine parameters for your specific machine model.
Clear Codes and Test
Once programmed, clear any historical codes and run the engine to verify that synchronization is maintained and no power loss occurs.
Parts you might need
(1)Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) Module
Manufacturer: Bosch (commonly Bosch EDC MS6.2, MS6.4, or EDC7UC31). Cannot swap a used ECU from a different machine without having it wiped and reprogrammed by a dealer. Always order the ECU using your machine's specific Engine Serial Number (ESN) and PIN.
