3740

Case IH 3740 – Engine ECU / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Power stages, Injector: DFC to set a torque limitation once an error is detected before MoCSOP's error reaction is set

Issue description

Internal module communication error. The Engine Control Unit's main CPU and its internal Monitoring Module (MM) have lost synchronization while communicating data regarding the fuel injector power stages, triggering an immediate torque limitation (engine derate) to protect the engine.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • MXM series
  • SV250
  • SR210B
  • TR320

Check the cause

  1. Check System Voltage: Verify battery voltage and ensure there are no under-voltage or over-voltage conditions reaching the EDC, as power fluctuations can cause internal CPU synchronization errors.

  2. Inspect Wiring and Grounds: Check the EDC power and ground connections for corrosion, looseness, or damage.

  3. Inspect Injector Harness: Check the engine wiring harness (specifically the injector harness) for shorts, chafing, or open circuits that could be back-feeding electrical noise into the EDC.

  4. Cycle Power: Clear the code and cycle the key. If the code is hard-set and immediately returns while the wiring is intact, the fault is an internal hardware failure within the EDC.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Locate EDC

Locate the EDC (typically mounted directly to the side of the engine block or on a nearby chassis bracket).

  3. Disconnect wiring harness

Carefully release the locking tabs and disconnect the main engine wiring harness connectors from the EDC.

  4. Remove faulty EDC

Remove the mounting bolts securing the EDC and remove the faulty unit.

  5. Install replacement EDC

Install the replacement EDC and torque the mounting hardware to OEM specifications.

  6. Reconnect wiring harness

Reconnect the wiring harness connectors, ensuring the locking levers are fully seated.

  7. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  8. Program new EDC

Programming Required: The new EDC will be blank or lack the specific machine configuration. You must use the Case IH EST (Electronic Service Tool) or a compatible diagnostic tool (like Jaltest) to flash the ECU with the correct software and horsepower configuration for your specific machine.

  9. Verify repair

Start the engine, verify that fault code 3740 is cleared, and confirm that the engine torque limitation (derate) has been lifted.
