3742

Case IH 3742 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): ECM Internal Error. If EDC Replaced, Follow The Appropriate Service Tool Procedure To Restore Self Learning Parameters.

Issue description

Fault code 3742 indicates a critical internal hardware or software failure within the engine controller. Specifically, it is an issue with the injector power stages, logging 'Too many SPI errors during MoCSOP execution' or a 'Wrong set response time'. The internal circuitry responsible for firing the fuel injectors or monitoring their voltage has failed or is experiencing severe communication errors.

Check the cause

  1. Check Power and Ground: Verify that the ECM is receiving proper voltage. Voltage spikes, severe drops, or a failing alternator can sometimes trigger false internal module errors.

  2. Inspect Injector Wiring: Inspect the engine wiring harness for dead shorts to ground or battery voltage. A shorted injector or harness can damage the ECM internally.

  3. Clear and Retest: Attempt to clear the fault code using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). If the code immediately returns upon key-on or engine cranking, the ECM is permanently damaged.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

Disconnect the negative battery terminal before unplugging the ECM to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Remove the EDC/ECM

Unplug the chassis and engine harnesses from the engine controller and unbolt it from its mounting bracket.

  3. Install the New EDC/ECM

Mount the replacement controller and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses.

  4. Program the Module

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.

  5. Restore Self-Learning Parameters

Use the EST to reload the engine dataset and execute the 'Restore Self Learning Parameters' procedure. This step is critical as it calibrates the new ECM to the specific fuel injectors (injector trim codes) and other engine sensors.
