3742

Case IH 3742 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Power stages, Injector: Too many SPI errors during MoCSOP execution

Issue description

The MoCSOP (Monitoring of the Shut-Off Path) is an internal safety and diagnostic test performed by the engine controller. This code triggers when the controller detects an excessive number of internal communication errors (SPI errors) while testing the injector power stages' shut-off path, indicating an irreversible internal hardware or software processing failure within the control unit itself.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • Steiger
  • Case IH combines

Check the cause

  1. Check for associated power stage codes (e.g., 3743 for undervoltage or 3744 for overvoltage) which might indicate a broader electrical supply issue to the EDC.

  2. Clear the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or EASy diagnostic tool.

  3. Perform a drive cycle: Run the engine, switch it off, and wait for at least 2 minutes. Restart the engine and repeat this cycle up to 3 times. If the code was a temporary anomaly, the MIL will turn off and the code will heal.

  4. Confirm internal failure: If code 3742 returns immediately and remains active during the 40-ms interval checks, the EDC is confirmed defective and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Remove the EDC

Locate the EDC module (typically mounted on the side of the engine block with vibration isolators) and carefully disconnect the main wiring harness connectors. Remove the module.

  3. Install the New EDC

Mount the replacement EDC and reconnect the wiring harnesses securely.

  4. Restore Power

    Reconnect the battery.

  5. Programming and Calibration

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). A new EDC will require programming.

  6. Restore Self-Learning Parameters

Follow the appropriate service tool procedure to restore self-learning parameters. This includes flashing the correct software payload, restoring immobilizer sync, and programming the specific injector trim codes.

  7. Final Verification

Clear any historical codes and run the engine to verify the repair.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) Module

Replacement EDCs are typically shipped blank or in a base state. They must be programmed by a dealer using the EST tool to function correctly with the tractor's CAN-bus network and fuel injectors.
