Case IH 3761 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): ECU internal failure - Torque request exceeds maximum torque limit
Issue description
The engine control unit has detected an internal calculation error or software anomaly where the requested engine torque is higher than the maximum allowable limit programmed into the module.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Steiger T4B
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- 7240
- 8240
- 9240
Check the cause
Check for related voltage codes (such as 3762 or 3763) which can cause the ECU to calculate torque requests incorrectly
Inspect power and ground connections to the Engine ECU for corrosion or loose connections causing intermittent voltage issues
Check for active service bulletins or software updates for the Universal Control Module (UCM1/UCM2)
Clear the fault code and perform a test run to determine if the code is a hard fault or an intermittent software glitch
Repair steps
Connect diagnostic tool
Connect a compatible diagnostic tool (such as the Case IH AFS Pro 700 display or Jaltest diagnostic tool) to the machine's diagnostic port.
Read fault codes
Read and record all active and stored fault codes to confirm DTC EADD (3761) is the primary issue.
Inspect wiring harness
Inspect the wiring harness connectors at the Engine ECU for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture intrusion. Clean and secure if necessary.
Update software
If the wiring is intact and the code remains active, attempt to re-flash or update the Engine ECU software to the latest version (e.g., updating UCM1/UCM2 to software versions like 35.18.0.0 or 33.45.0.0, depending on your machine's specific PIN and emissions tier).
Replace Engine ECU
If the software update does not resolve the issue, the Engine ECU has suffered a hard internal hardware failure and must be replaced.
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the machine's battery.
Install replacement module
Remove the faulty Engine ECU and install the replacement module.
Program and calibrate
Reconnect the battery and use the diagnostic tool to program the new module to the machine and calibrate it to the engine.
